Agreed. For one thing, a shutdown could cause loss of braking and steering on HydroVac P30s.

I had a Mercruiser-equipped boat that had a low oil pressure shut down. Sure enough, the switch malfunctioned and shut down the engine at an inopportune time. I got home by holding the ignition switch just far enough to bypass the LOP switch, but not far enough to engage the starter.

Needless to say, there was a wiring revision the next morning.

The Evans coolant sounds intriguing and makes sense to me, However....the number of mis-spellings on their web page and their lack of science to back up their claims makes me weary of trying something new.

As far as an overtemp cut-out switch, I fly airplanes for a living and I'm REALLY glad we don't have anything like that on the jet. A buzzer or light sounds like a great idea though.

Anyone else have a Detroit fail on them?

Jim & Barb, Lorelei, Patch 1st, and Deb&Ed's38 have all had failures. Doug Smiley and CaptBob have the only two intact 8.2Ls that I know of.

My brother has an '84 MCC Regency with the 8.2 DD and it is still running. He doesn't do computers (I've bought him three!) but he and his diesel buddies seem to have no problems. He is very careful with cooling and they have the special tools for the injector timing. He travels in Western New York through the northeast and north central areas.

As far as straight glycol vs DexCool, I believe that DexCool was designed to inhibit corrosion in engines that contain different metals. I think with my new radiator and hoses cooling shouldn't be too much of a problem for right now. What I really want to do is prevent corrosion of the head gaskets or deck surfaces. Without spending $40/gallon plus the cleaner for the untried coolant, I'm betting the DexCool will be the best product to prevent corrosion. I'm just looking for someone who may have used this coolant in their diesel (maybe even an 8.2)

I use DexCool (or the NAPA clone) in both my Barth and my diesel '87 1T Ford van. Neither have exhibited cooling issues (14 years for the truck, 8 years for the Barth); I also use RMI-25 in the Barth.
